The results of the Downtown Pub Crawl are in! Downtown is expensive! Since we went on a Saturday night, we didn't get to see much of the downtown scene.
We lost Keith, Stef and Karla at the LRT station, and they didn't meet up with us at New City. But our first stop at New City Suburbs, then upstairs to the Liquid Lounge was fun. You can't argue with $9 pitchers of Grasshopper! Suburbs, downstairs, is much like the Suburbs at the old location. Goth/industry/punk music, they often have live shows and I'm told that there's good dancing later on in the night. Since it was our first location, we missed out on these good times. The Lounge, upstairs, is basically unchanged from the Paladium Club a year or so ago, which is still fairly nice.
Nathan then led us to a place called Hawkeye's, which has the coolest bathrooms ever (except downtown Calgary's Earls, which has LCD doors that are clear when the door's open and opaque when it's closed)!! I wish I had a picture because I just can't describe it beyond the two words "shiny metal." The place seemed like it was transplanted from Smalltown Alberta to downtown Edmonton. The waitress was great... she brought everyone a free shot of vodka and sourpuss. Jesse's favorite! How did she know?
We made our way west and stopped in the next place that looked like a club. $4.95 bottles of beer and highballs plus $5 cover got us out of there very quickly! I don't think we even finished our game of pool!
We tried to get into Globe but the line was really long and everyone had gone to Stonehouse. I still haven't gone inside that bar, although I've now stood in line at least twice. We headed back to Jean's place in HUB because there were movies there and drinks were nice and cheap, and after some tasty Wendy's called it a night.
All in all, I'd say it was a successful pub crawl, except for losing 3 people and only seeing 3 bars. I had a great time and I think everyone else had fun too.
I just read an interesting article about Beer in Canada. Molson and Labatt are no longer the only choice for beer drinkers of our generation. As we all know, there are now wonderful choices of much better tasting beer, such as Big Rock and Sleemans, available at most drinking establishments. Although it's not hurting the big boys' sales or profits much, they are beginning to take notice.
The author of this article was once an editor of the Gateway, and he mentions the now Editor-in-chief, Chris Boutet. It was just a random link I followed from the MSN website: something you see after signing out of hotmail. So a bunch of Canadians will be reading about what kind of beer Chris Boutet drinks in the Gateway offices. Maybe you should too.
Read about beers for the new generationAll this talk of beer is making me thirsty, and I just happen to have a few bottles of Big Rock Grasshopper left in the fridge. Ah, now that's a good beer.
